Shop and Master Suite Addition, Lucy
and Mitch Zammarelli home, Eugene, Or.
Two growing children and Mitch’s growing cabinetmaking business seriously warranted adding to the 900 sq foot home and the one-car garage being used for woodworking. We discovered marvelous distant views of the Cascade foothills from a level of standing on the roof ridge of the original house. The high-clearance new shop and a split-level scheme for the master suite above delivered this vista. Matched siding and roof pitches, and care in scaling, resulted in a design flowing smoothly from old into new. The master suite features three levels; bed and sitting area, a mezzanine, and two upper lofts connected by a bridge. One of the loft frameworks defines a "bed cave". The southerly sitting area lets onto a long, wide balcony bathed in dappled summer light. For the railings of the various levels, copper tubing, of several diameters is used extensively and is sturdy-looking... yet the rounded contours of the tubes create soft lines and allow the eye to easily pass through and all the space flows effortlessly. Contrasts.... between abundant green-painted walls and natural woods, between heavily-sandblasted cedar timber surfaces and mirror-smooth maple floors, between broken stone edges and polished stone surfaces, between tile and wood textures and colors... are some of the striking effects chosen by Mitch, who did much of the work. |
